My work is about the effects that light and atmosphere have on people and places. I am a keen observer of the world around me. With camera or sketchbook in hand, I seek to provide myself with the visual information necessary to work from back in the studio. The summer haze, early morning mist, crisp wintery light, etc all have a unique effect on the subject and I strive to capture that in my painting. The beautiful Mt. Washington Valley Region of New Hampshire that I live in provides me with inspiration to paint just as it has inspired many artists before me. I love to paint people doing the activities that make life enjoyable. I try to capture poses that show the movement (or relaxation) of that particular pursuit and minimize the details. I hope that the poses, colors and shapes I choose allow the viewer to respond to the painting in their own way, reminiscent of a relaxing day at the beach, the excitement and pageantry of a dog show, or the natural beauty of the New England landscape.
My primary medium is watercolor. I love the way colors merge and mingle together, creating color passages like no other painting medium can. A painting satisfies me when not only the shapes and colors make a clear statement about the effect of light and atmosphere on the subject, but also when the paint quality has the excitement of colors mingling together without looking overworked. I also enjoy working in pastel and love the intense colors and rich surfaces possible in that medium. My work tends to evolve in a series of paintings of similar subject matter. I find that doing several paintings of the same subject enables me to explore its many facets.
